Over the past decade shale deposits have become both an important source for domestic natural gas and a source of speculation, interest and concern for its potential to upend existing channels of oil production and transportation.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the Piceance Basin alone is estimated to contain over 1.5 trillion barrels. Nearby, the Uintah basin in Northeastern Utah is estimated to contain 1.3 trillion barrels. It isn’t difficult to imagine the effect these reserves could have on the global oil market if and when they come into play over the next decade.
